Cat (1989) Catwoman Promo UK 12″

Very Brief:
This Catwoman promo 12″ was released in 1989 without any listing for the record label that released it. It was most likely pressed for Red Dot Records since they published all of the other releases of “Catwoman” in the UK. The label was started up by Steve Fargnoli who served as Prince’s personal manager in the 80s. The mixes on this promo were produced and mixed by Tim Simenon, also known as Bomb The Bass.

I remember buying the 3inch CD single when this was first released – with great anticipation. As Cat was spectacular throughout Sign O’The Times and Lovesexy, I thought this was going to be awesome – how wrong I was. Awful and terrible don’t come near to describing this.

In recent years I re-visited this, perhaps in the hope the music on the CD had changed – but how wrong I was!

This has to be one of the worse Prince related tracks – ever!

I could never got over the lyric “Bomb the Bass, you wanna rape?” – What? Really? Why would anyone want to sing that? How on earth did anyone think this would even get radio play?

At least we can still laugh at this even after all these years.

On another note, the Mad Mix, is exclusive to this promo so thank you for this awesome rip!

    🙂

With regard to the label credit or lack of, the catalogue number put it firmly as WEA or WEA International as YZ was their prefix for 12″ single releases at that time. Red Dot was a sub-label of Warner so this fits and as you say all commercial releases in the UK were on Red Dot…but in Europe they were dual labeled as WEA and Red Dot.

So in my opinion this promo should be considered a WEA release because of use of the YZ ref instead of RDT which was used on all Red Dot releases.

    …further to last comment.

Something Stupid by Inga was on WEA 12″ as YZ439T

The promo was on WEA ‎as YZ439SAM

…so that same SAM suffix and part of the same run of 3 figure numbers.
