Con Funk Shun (1982) Ain’t Nobody Baby 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
Welcome to Fun With Vinyl 2016. The reason my voice is so clear. Is there’s no smack… in my brain.  I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season.  Well, I’m still posting on a limited basis of 2 records per week.  I am fully confident that by June I will be back to 5 records per week.  I appreciate everyone being patient and supportive during this very busy time in my life.  I’m looking forward to things settling down and slowing down.

So, let’s kick off the first couple of weeks of 2016 with some old school funk.  Up today is “Ain’t Nobody Baby” from Con Funk Shun’s ‘To The Max’ album of 1982.  This promo contains an extended version of the track on side A and an edit version on the flip side.  The original album track had a running time of 5:32.

    Great track, sir.

You know, being of similar age and similar musical background, I wanted to thank you for filling in so many excellent records from “our” era.

Our era of funk does not seem to be as revered as the earlier 1960s and 1970s versions. I have no problem with that. I understand that so much of the sound was powered by (then) new technology that has quickly sounded dated.

Still, it is mine and I make no excuses for it. Most Gap Band songs sound the same but all are great played at full blast. “Cutie Pie” by One Way is a deathless classic. “Too Tight” by Con Funk Shun, the band with this week’s post, is always welcome.

My friends and I could not afford all the records we wanted back in the day. But between the four of us, we could buy many of them. We all went to the store weekly and never bought what someone else already had. (Lucky me, I was the guy to buy Street Songs.) We then would bring all the records to one guy’s house and make tapes of every great song. That way, we all had the perfect collection. We called then “The Funk Tapes”. From 1980 to 1983, we made about 14 90-minute cassettes. I have long since transferred them to CD and am never without the complete collection in my car, and, in recent years, have been adding to them with songs that were missed by us or too regional to another place.

You have provided many of those new ones–including this one.

Sean, nice to see some appreciation for the 80s funk. My sentiments are the same as yours. You should enjoy the rest of this week and next week…
