Fun With Vinyl Collections 1-21

IMPORTANT: The Fun With Vinyl Collections in their original form are no longer housed on the blog, primarily for disk space considerations. Most all of the tracks in these original collections are available on the blog as part of the original record they were released on. I see no reason to have “duplicate” files on the server eating up disk space… disk space ain’t cheap (hit the tip jar please?). So, since there is still interest in having these collections, I have updated these pages with a download of the artwork for each collection and links within the blog where you can download the tracks to create your own copy of the collections. The only exceptions are “The Virtual U.S. 7″ Singles Boxes”, not all of those records are on the blog so, I have returned the full downloads of those. Enjoy!

Fun With Vinyl CollectionsBefore FWV became a proper blog, I embarked on a project to digitize all of the tracks I had on vinyl that I didn’t have on CD.  I didn’t originally start off recording entire records and scanning the artwork for them.  My first attempt became the Fun With Vinyl Collections of loosely related volumes.

A few things were happening around this time…  One, I was growing tired of the constant “work” I was doing as a mobile DJ and was looking to get out of a business I had been involved in for 20 years or so.  Two, I was realizing that I had a lot of cool music stored away in cabinets that I never got to listen to and I wanted to bring that music “back to life”. Three, I was about to have a DJ website with no DJ business to promote so, what was I going to do with my web real estate?

Fun With Vinyl CollectionsSo, as I’ve mentioned on the blog before, after numerous experiments with converting vinyl to digital, I had settled on a method that produced the quality and results I wanted.  So, I set about working on the records.  During the time I was recording, I guess the DJ side of me wanted to share this with others.  I thought, there’s got to be other folks that remember these records and would want to hear them, too.  Since I was primarily doing Prince and related artists to start with, one of the first places I went to bring up the subject of what I was doing was the forums at prince.org.  There I was met with some skeptical derision and one person with genuine interest. That person, who to this day, I only know by his screen name, squirrelgrease, turned out to be a wonderful graphic artist.

Fun With Vinyl CollectionsI made the decision to post the Fun With Vinyl Collections at the torrent trading site Demonoid.  I had posted two or three of the collections already when I told squirrelgrease where they were and where to get them.  He immediately contacted me after downloading them and offered to create artwork to go with the collections.  I didn’t think much of it really, at first.  But, I said sure go ahead, I’ll wait a bit before posting the next collection so it can go up with the artwork.  When I got the images from him, I nearly flipped out, the old vinyl worn images with the pinup girls totally captured the feel of the collections in my mind.  So, from that point on, as I created each collection, I sent him track listings and he put together the artwork.  We collaborated this way through 18 volumes.  Before I abandoned the format, I got the interest to put together a complete collection of all of Prince’s US commercially released 7″ singles and ‘The Virtual U.S. 7” Singles Box’ wound up rounding out the Fun With Vinyl Collections volumes at a total of 20.  The Singles Box even got a positive review as a proper bootleg release over at The Digital Garden.

Fun With Vinyl CollectionsAfter I had released several volumes of the Fun With Vinyl Collections, I decided that djrichiep.us could be a place to offer these records in addition to Demonoid.  So, that was what preceded the blog here.  As a matter of fact, you can go to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and see how djrichiep.us  has evolved over the years and see how these collections were listed here in 2010 (formerly it was a .com site that I lost in a disappointing hacking incident in Dec 2013).

As I say, that was early 2010 when I started releasing the Fun With Vinyl Collections.  I have been and still am asked about these collections, where are they and how to get them to this day.  The damned things are even being SOLD by some creep at the site iOffer!  So, I have decided to bring these volumes back to djrichiep.us where they rightly belong.  When I started actually blogging, I felt that these collections were superseded by the actual 12″ posts I was doing and that interest in them would pass.  I’ve been reminded numerous times that I was wrong about that so, by semi-popular demand, these Fun With Vinyl Collections will now reside where they belong.

What follows are the original write-ups I did at the time of each release, I tried to keep them just as they were originally…

May they continue to bring enjoyment for many years to come….

Directory of the Fun With Vinyl Collections:

FWV001: Prince / The Time / Vanity 6 / Apollonia 6 / Sheila E.

I recently decided to get serious about converting my vinyl collection. So, I ditched the JVC semi-automic turntable I’ve had since the mid-80’s and bought a brand spanking new Technics SL-1200MK2 with an Audio Technica AT440MLa phono cartridge. The tracks that make up this issue are the first batch converted with my new turntable, I hope you’ll find something in this batch that interests you. I’m going back and starting over at the beginning of my vinyl collection and converting everything I haven’t found on CD. My vinyl collection consists primarily of 12″ singles with an emphasis on Prince and related artists.

I have managed to find almost all Prince 12″ versions and B-Sides on either officially released CDs or bootlegs. The only thing I have that I haven’t found on CD are the “Vocal Version” and “Guitar Version” edits of Pink Cashmere from the promo 12″. So, I have included those here along with b-sides, some single edits and remixes from The Time. I’m also throwing in Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 here since The Time was their “backing band”. Plus it includes all of Sheila E.’s 12″ versions and b-sides that I have on vinyl and have never found on CD.

I’ll be sharing the rest of my work here so, stay tuned, I have 37 different issues planned, so there should be LOTS of Fun With Vinyl to come…

How I do it: Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable w/Audio Technica AT440MLa phono cartridge via analog connection to a Yamaha RX-Z1 A/V Receiver which goes analog to a Sony PCM-R300 DAT deck. The DAT deck does the analog to digital conversion and the audio signal is then sent digitally through a Turtle Beach Catalina sound card and recorded via Cool Edit Pro as a wav file on my computer. The wav file is then processed with ClickRepair, trimmed/edited in Cool Edit Pro and converted to FLAC. All FLAC files have been verified with Trader’s Little Helper. I guess the simplified lineage would be: Vinyl>WAV>FLAC

A HUGE THANK YOU to squirrelgrease for the artwork that accompanies these releases. To put it simply, the artwork is stunning!

FWV002: The Family / Mazarati / Jill Jones

Continuing with the Minneapolis Sound, here is a 12″ version from The Family, a 12″ version and some b-sides from Mazarati and 12″ versions and b-sides from Jill Jones. The b-sides from Mazarati in this issue are better to me than anything that was on the album but, that’s my opinion, your mileage may vary.

FWV010: Flyte Tyme Pt1

This issue contains some of the earliest production work that Jam & Lewis did for other artists. Here we have the Klymaxx LP “Girls Will Be Girls” featuring Jam/Lewis production on tracks 2, 4, 5 & 6 (I included the whole album here). Thelma Houston’s “Qualifying Heat” LP had Jimmy & Terry’s production on side 1 which is all I included of this album. I included the S.O.S. Band’s track ‘For Your Love’ as it is the only Flyte Tyme track from “On The Rise” I’ve never acquired on CD. The rest of the issue is the usual mixes, remixes, dubs, etc. from the super hot Cherrelle as well as Cheryl Lynn, Janet Jackson, Patti Austin, The S.O.S. Band and Thelma Houston.

How I do it: Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable w/Audio Technica AT440MLa phono cartridge via analog connection to a Yamaha RX-Z1 A/V Receiver which goes analog to a Sony PCM-R300 DAT deck. FWV011: Flyte Tyme Pt2

More production work from original members of The Time: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. This issue features 12″ versions from Flyte Tyme Productions artists Herb Alpert, Johnny Gill, Human League, New Edition, Karyn White, Nona Hendryx and Rhonda Clark. I also threw in a 12″ by Centerfold here, they were co-produced by Monte Moir and Ricky Peterson. I also threw in a scan of a postcard that came in the 12″ that I have had since 1988 and never knew it was in there until I got the record out to record it for this issue. Anyway, here’s the usual collection of mixes, remixes, dubs, etc. from 12″ singles in my record collection.

A HUGE THANK YOU to squirrelgrease for the artwork that accompanies these issues. To put it simply, the artwork is stunning!

FWV012: Wendy & Lisa / St. Paul

These two artists never seemed to easily fit into the categories that I have for the other artists in this series. So, this may be a strange combination but, here they are none the less. Most of the Wendy & Lisa stuff I have is on CD but, included here are some tracks from vinyl that I never acquired on CD. The ladies are represented here with various mixes, remixes, dubs, etc. from assorted 12″ singles. St. Paul’s first solo LP was available on CD but, I never got it and from searching the web, it seems pretty hard to come by so, here’s a rip from my vinyl copy along with mixes from two 12″ singles that were released from this album.

How I do it: Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable w/Audio Technica AT440MLa phono cartridge via analog connection to a Yamaha RX-Z1 A/V Receiver which goes analog to a Sony PCM-R300 DAT deck. FWV014: Warning: Contains Prince-like Substance

I remember this being the only artwork I ever sent back to squirrelgrease asking for a change.  I was so pleased with my “witty phrase” Warning: Contains Prince-like Substance that I wanted it to be included in the cover art.  Originally, the warning “sticker” wasn’t on there…

The tracks in this issue have either a direct or indirect involvement from Prince. Some tracks were written and produced by Prince. Some are just songs that Prince wrote and were either given to the artist or are simply just cover versions that Prince had no input in. Some of it is so cheesy that you just have to listen to it at least once for a full appreciation! Also in here is the “Special Medley” from Sheila E. that should have been in Volume 1. I missed it the first time around so, I figured this was the best place to squeeze it in. Here’s an eclectic mix of album cuts and 12″ versions from, as always, vinyl and in lossless quality for your listening pleasure.

How I do it: Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable w/Audio Technica AT440MLa phono cartridge via analog connection to a Yamaha RX-Z1 A/V Receiver which goes analog to a Sony PCM-R300 DAT deck. FWV018: Prince: The Vinyl Era

Since the release of this collection, I have obtained my own personal copies of all the records in this issue.  This release now includes rips of my own records, vice the borrowed ones.

Always save the best for last, right? This collection of 33 vinyl cuts came about from a discussion about Prince tracks that have never been available on CD or as an official lossless digital download, vinyl only (well, maybe cassette or 8-track, but…really?). I’ve put them through the same process as all my other vinyl issues, so hopefully you will enjoy these tracks. Included here are single edits, remixes, extended and dub versions from Prince that have not seen an official lossless digital release.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I took ‘Just As Long As We’re Together (Disco Mix)’, ‘Soft And Wet (Disco Mix)’, ‘Sexy Dancer (Long Version)’ and ‘Pop Life (Extended Version)’ from ‘T’s 12″ Archive V2.0’. I took ‘Just As Long As We’re Together (Edit)’, ‘Still Waiting (Edit)’, ‘All The Critics Love U In New York (Edit)’ & ‘Baby I’m A Star (Edit)’ from ‘7 Inch In The Computer Volume 1 1978-1986’. I ripped these eight four tracks from lossless sources and put them through the same ClickRepair process that I have used on all of my vinyl conversions.   All tracks were taken from my personal record collection.

This is the end of the road for large collections of vinyl rips being posted as Fun With Vinyl. However, I have started a blog where I will continue sharing my vinyl rips: http://djrichiep.us Here you will find vinyl rips from various artists with and without connections to Prince. I hope everyone has enjoyed this series and was able to hear some tracks they had never heard before or, at the least, better quality than they had before. I hope everyone continues to “Enjoy and get it on”!!

FWV019: Prince – The Virtual U.S. 7″ Singles Box Volume 1

One more little treat for all of you, something that took root out of the Fun With Vinyl series. While putting the Fun With Vinyl series together and doing research on it, I took an interest in putting together a complete set of singles released by Prince, spanning his entire career. Of course, if you have ever researched the single releases by Prince you know that you will eventually find yourself going off on a tangent here, a tangent there, never really accomplishing anything because there are just so many commercial releases, promotional releases, a slightly different release in this country vice that country, an edit here, a different edit there and it just goes on and on and on. So, I decided to set some boundaries and come up with a particular slice of those releases that could be completed and be definitive without needing to be updated in years to come. So, here are my parameters… concentrate only on releases from the United States, only include singles that were released on vinyl, those singles would only be 7″/45RPM releases and, finally, only commercially available releases would be considered. The result is now being offered to you as a free download.

This box set is being released in two 4CD volumes (a FLAC version and an MP3 version). Volume 1 covers the years 1978-1987, ‘For You’ through ‘Sign ‘O’ The Times’. Volume 2 picks up from there and goes from 1988-1995, ‘Lovesexy’ through ‘The Gold Experience’. 1995 saw the last release of a mass-produced, commercially available 7″/45RPM record bearing Prince’s name and thus ended an era. Vinyl has made a comeback in recent years but, I don’t think the 7″/45RPM single will ever be mass produced in the way it was prior to the development of the Compact Disc. “Singles” are now available all over the internet from iTunes to Amazon to your favorite P2P or torrent site. It will never be economically viable for record companies to mass produce these little vinyl nuggets ever again.

Once again, all kudos for the artwork go to squirrelgrease. Another professional job on the artwork. Thanks, also, to an anonymous donor of some lossless digital rips from some CDs that I didn’t have… “your upload will be completed and ready to move soon, LOL.” Research sources: MoQuake (since closed) and Sleevographia.

Volume 1 is being released this week and Volume 2 will follow next week. The Virtual U.S. 7″ Singles Box has been compiled from various sources, official vinyl, official CD and unofficial CD. Digital sources were given top priority and vinyl sources were used only if a digital source had never been available. No “remastering” or tweaking has been done on any of these tracks, they are direct rips from original sources and have been converted to a lossless or mp3 format (depending on the version you choose). The FLAC files were converted using dbPoweramp and were compressed using Compression Level 5 (Default) option. The MP3 files were also converted using dbPoweramp with the LAME encoder set for VBR, “extreme” quality setting and the “Slow (High Quality)” encoding option.

FWV020: Prince – The Virtual U.S. 7″ Singles Box Volume 2

Volume 1 was released a week ago and now, here’s Volume 2.

FWV021 Prince – The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box

As the special Paisley June 2016 came to a close, I thought it would be nice to end it with a bang! Some milestones have been noted this month, we have celebrated Prince’s legacy with all of the wonderful people that joined in as guest bloggers this month, they did a fantastic job! On June 27th, Fun With Vinyl marked the 6th anniversary of the first blog post. And now, as Paisley June 2016 closes out, all of Prince’s commercially released U.S. 12″ singles are accessible on the blog. So, I thought, why not revisit the Fun With Vinyl collections and present the long awaited companion piece to the The Virtual U.S. 7″ Singles Box? Thus, today, I present to you The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box.

Of course, in order to tie a new Fun With Vinyl collection in with the previous issues, we need beautiful artwork to make it complete. So, I reached out to squirrelgrease once again and to my delight, he agreed to participate in the project! The continuity of the collections was important to me and I am very happy with the results all the way around. squirrelgrease’s graphic design talents have no bounds, just pull down the complete artwork set, linked at the bottom of this page, and enjoy the visuals he has created.

The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles BoxSo, as I kind of foreshadowed at the beginning of Paisley June, we now have available vinyl rips of all of Prince’s commercially released US 12 inch vinyl records from 1982-2006, from “Let’s Work” to “Black Sweat”. You, my dear friends, are now able to compile your own sets of The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box with squirrelgrease’s accompanying artwork. It’s just like the old days of the original Fun With Vinyl Collections albeit, distributed in a slightly different manner.  The uniqueness of this box is that all tracks are vinyl rips from my personal vinyl collection. Nothing “borrowed”, nothing ripped from digital, 100% vinyl sourced.

To qualify for The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box, the releases had to have been available for sale to the general public in the United States either through record stores, retail outlets or mail order and not designated as a promotional only item. In order to tie all these releases together and provide you with quick access to The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box, I have created this page with release info for each 12″ and links to each record (click the images).

The original artwork set for The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box is available as a separate file that you can obtain from the link at the bottom of this page.

P.S.: I’m interested to see how many of you will take the time to burn this entire set to CD and decorate the entire package with squirrelgrease’s art. For those of you that do, please take photos of the finished product and share them with everyone on the Fun With Vinyl Facebook or Twitter social media pages. I look forward to seeing pics of completed sets.

Just stumbled in here today and I’m so grateful for the time and effort you put into all this. Amazing what can be found on the internet.

  2. FunkFan says:

Props on the fantastic site. It looks like the FLAC version of the first volume contains a corrupt file: Just As Long As We’re Together (Edit) won’t convert for me (lost sync, bad header). Just a FYI.

  3. Princess says:

Maybe I’m crazy, but it appears to me that several other tracks on the first volume are also corrupt. Could they somehow have become corrupted over the years? It seems weird that nobody would have pointed this out before now.

The good news is, you’re not crazy. The bad news is, you’re right. I just tested all of the files you listed using my local copy and all of them prompted conversion errors when I tried to convert them to WAV. What a stinking mess.

Like you, I am surprised this has never been brought up before. These files have been available from here for well over 5 years and this is the first time I have been made aware of this.

I’m going to link some of the files to posts that contain the corrupt tracks as a work-around. I will spend some time this weekend fixing all of this and get a new set of files uploaded. Just damn.

I’m curious, what is your purpose for converting the files from FLAC? For CD burning or to convert to a different MP3 bitrate?

  4. VillanovaJunction says:

thanks so much djrichiep…!!! several years ago I’ve download the big box vinyl collection (the 2 big Prince) and the pin-up sets… the artwork was so tremendous (and the SQ the best I’ve ever heard in comparison to some other sets). It obviously deserved to be burn on CDR vinyl like + glossy paper…

I am slow or where is the download link of this “The Virtual US 12 Inch Singles Box” ? Generally it’s a FLAC icon…
I’ve been able to download the artwork… But I can’t find a download link for the whole set. Instead of it it’s a link to a software…
Should I open instead all of the related-page-links to each individual release and download each of these and put it into a new folder ?
(in that case, I think that it will be difficult to resist to not print the artwork for each vinyl set…)

    • djrichiep says:

Yes VJ this is a do-it-yourself project. You can read the first paragraph at the top of this page for the reason why. So, how you put the set together is completely in your hands, be creative and have fun with it, enjoy!
