Kid Creole And The Coconuts (1990) The Sex Of It (Tropical Mix) UK 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
In 1990, Kid Creole & The Coconuts recorded the Prince composition “The Sex Of It” and released it as the first single from their album ‘Private Waters In The Great Divide’. According to PrinceVault, Prince not only wrote the song but also co-produced it and performed on the recording, though his musical input was not credited. The commercial release was posted here back in 2011 but, today we will take a listen to the “Tropical Mix” from a white label promo that was only issued in the UK. Notes from the release page at Discogs say that the “Tropical Mix” is exclusive to this 12″ and includes samples from other Kid Creole And The Coconuts songs. I faintly recall someone requesting this record back in 2011 after I posted the commercial 12″ release, good things come to those who wait?

Great unexpected post!! This uncredited sample-heavy remix was done by Jason Davies, who was also part of the Mixbusters along with Steve Anderson that did some remixes for the DMC remix service, including a crazy sample-filled remix of Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock – It Takes Two. As there were several similar sample-heavy promo only white label remixes out in the UK around the same time, I got in contact with Jason a few years back and I was able to confirm which artists/tracks he mixed for Columbia. They include New Kids On The Block – You Got It (The Right Stuff) (The Ill-Eagle Mix), Martika – More Than You Know (Mixbusted Mix), and LL Cool J – Clap Your Hands (The Mixbuster Mix). For legal reasons these were never released commercially due to sample clearance. Some other UK promo-only sample-heavy mixes he did not remix but might be worth finding are Johnny Kemp – Just Got Paid, Bros – I Owe You Nothing/When Will I Be Famous, and Nick Kamen – Bring Me Your Love/Tell Me, all released from 1988-1990.
