The Kinks (1982) Come Dancing UK 12″

Very Brief:
After two months of theme-related postings, the first day of August takes us back to the usual randomness that many of you are accustomed to. Of course, I usually have some sort of underlying theme in mind whenever I post, usually a week of similar style records or of related artists or one single artist (remnants of my time as a working DJ?). This week will be a series of rock ‘n’ roll related records from the early 80s. The Kinks are by no means an 80s band, their first single release came back in 1964 which is also the year they scored their first #1 hit in the UK (#7 US) with the well-known and oft-covered “You Really Got Me”. Flash forward nearly 20 years to 1982 and we find The Kinks still hitting the pop charts with “Come Dancing”, the first single from their 1983 LP ‘State of Confusion’.  As a matter of fact, 1983 was the last time The Kinks reached the Top 40 in the US. “Come Dancing” peaked at #6 and the follow-up “Don’t Forget To Dance” reached #29.

I normally like to point out when I’m posting vinyl only tracks but, this time around, I will let the words of Wikipedia explain this record for me: “While there have been at least 7 reissues of this album [State of Confusion] on CD in various countries (all with 4 bonus cuts), none of them have issued the extended “Come Dancing” 12-inch mix on CD (which contains an extended horn ending), which to this day is only available on vinyl. In addition, the extended 12-inch version of “Noise” has never been released on CD and is only available on vinyl.”

Incredible version! Always liked The Kinks, but this is the one track from their Arista years I’d never found on singles (either 7 or 12 inch) at all (in fact,it wasn’t until their MCA debut that singles by The Kinks started showing up here in the Houston area! Talk about behind the Times! Lol)

I just happened upon this 12″ one day and picked it up cuz I’d always liked the song. I had no idea these tracks were vinyl only until I was researching for something to write about the record. A pleasant surprise.

I believe the Kinks did make it back to the Top 40 one last time in 1984-85 with the song “Do it again”.
