Tyka Nelson (1988) L.O.V.E. 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
Since Prince’s death earlier this year, Tyka Nelson has been, more or less, for better or worse, the face of his estate. She is Prince’s sister, born two years after Prince. In the late 80s, she attempted to start a music career of her own. Tyka Nelson released the album ‘Royal Blue’ in 1988. Three tracks were released either commercially or promotionally in support of the album: “L.O.V.E.”, “Marc Anthony’s Tune” and “This Girl’s Gonna Fall In Love”. Two of the singles charted on Billboard’s R&B singles chart, “Marc Anthony’s Tune” reached #33 and “L.O.V.E.” peaked at #52. They were the only two singles she ever charted with.  Today’s record is “L.O.V.E.”, it was co-written by Tyka and produced by David Z. with Ricky Peterson. Shep Pettibone was brought in for the remixes and he contributed the Dance Mix and Dub Version.

I bought her CD when it was first released just because of the Prince association. At the time I thought the sound was very much like the early Janet Jackson soul albums, such as the self titled first album and Dream Street. However, that is where the similarity comes to an abrupt end!

Tyka’s voice is as thin as La Toya Jackson and overall is just as talentless!

I feel sorry for the producers having to try to make Tyka sound good as nothing was going to make that happen – so what we have are actually some good melodies and production – but that is it!

That being said, Tyka’s records are a valid part of Prince associated history.
